Every Glamping Site Inside a UK National Park, Mapped

Plenty of sites advertise themselves as being "in the Lake District". Rather fewer are inside the boundary. We ran every site we list against the actual national park polygons to find out which ones are, and the answer reorders the league table completely.

"In the national park" is one of the least policed claims in travel marketing. It usually means "near", and near is doing a lot of work: a site can be forty minutes from the boundary and still describe itself as being in the Lakes. That is not always dishonest; a valley village outside the line may well be the better base. But it is not the same claim.

So we tested it. Every site we list has been checked against the actual national park boundary polygons, and this is what came back.

The explanation is land use rather than popularity. The South Downs is a lived-in, farmed landscape with villages and working farms throughout, exactly the conditions that produce small campsites. The Lake District’s core is fell, water and conservation land, and its accommodation concentrates in the valley settlements, several of which sit just outside the line.

Why boundaries are the wrong tool for booking

This is worth being honest about, because it cuts against the premise of the article. For actually choosing where to stay, the boundary is close to irrelevant. Glamping sites cluster in the valleys and villages at the edge of a park, and a searcher looking for the Lake District is served just as well by a site two miles outside the line as one inside it.

That is why our Lake District and Peak District pages use a catchment, a centre and a radius, rather than the polygon. The boundary answers a different question: not "where should I stay" but "which of these is genuinely in the park".

What being inside actually changes

  • Development is tighter. Park authorities are the planning authority, which is why new pods appear more slowly inside a boundary than outside it, and why the sites that exist tend to be small and long-established.
  • Dark skies. Several parks hold International Dark Sky Reserve status, and lighting restrictions inside the boundary are part of why. See stargazing sites.
  • Access. Rights of way networks are generally denser and better maintained inside a park.
  • Signal. Often worse. Planning restrictions apply to masts too.

Getting there without a car

While we were measuring things: 354 of the sites we list sit within two miles of a railway station. National parks are not well served on that measure. The Peak District is the notable exception, with Edale, Hope, Hathersage and Grindleford all on the Manchester–Sheffield line, which is why Mam Tor is one of the few classic hill walks you can genuinely do by train.

Does a site have to be inside the boundary to be "in" a national park?
Legally the boundary is precise, but for choosing where to stay it matters less than people assume. Sites cluster in the valleys and villages at the edge of parks, and those are often better placed for the trailheads.

Yes. Park authorities are the planning authority within their boundary and apply tighter development control, which is why sites inside tend to be smaller and longer established.
