The Best Waterfalls in Wales
Wales has the densest concentration of accessible waterfalls in Britain, and one corner of the Brecon Beacons has so many it is simply called Waterfall Country. One of them you can walk behind.

The geology does the work. Where hard gritstone sits over softer shale, rivers cut down through the soft rock and leave the hard layer standing, which is exactly the arrangement along the southern rim of Bannau Brycheiniog. Add Welsh rainfall and you get Waterfall Country: four significant falls on one circular walk, and a dozen more within a few miles.
Waterfall Country and the Four Waterfalls Walk
The classic route is a circular of roughly 4.5 to 5.5 miles from Cwm Porth, taking three to four hours plus however long you spend at the falls, which is always longer than planned. It takes in four named falls:
- Sgwd Clun-Gwyn: "fall of the white meadow", the first and the widest view.
- Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn: the lower fall of the same name, with the trickiest path down.
- Sgwd y Pannwr: "fall of the fuller", the quietest of the four.
- Sgwd yr Eira: "waterfall of snow", and the reason people come: the path runs behind the curtain of water.
Sgwd yr Eira is genuinely the highlight. A ledge behind the fall lets you walk from one bank to the other with the water falling in front of you, an experience that is rare anywhere and almost unique in Britain at this scale.

Henrhyd Falls
The tallest waterfall in South Wales at 27 metres, in a wooded gorge on the Nant Llech, and owned by the National Trust. The path down from the car park near Coelbren is about a mile round trip with steep sections and steps. It doubled as the entrance to the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises, which it has never entirely lived down.
Pistyll Rhaeadr
In the Berwyn hills near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, and generally cited as the tallest waterfall in Wales. The water drops in stages through a natural stone arch known as the Fairy Bridge. It is a long drive down a narrow lane to reach it, which keeps the numbers down. One of the traditional Seven Wonders of Wales.
The north
Aber Falls
Rhaeadr Fawr, near Abergwyngregyn on the north coast, reached by an easy and well-surfaced walk of about a mile and a half through woodland and open valley. It is the most family-friendly major waterfall walk in Wales.
Swallow Falls
On the Llugwy near Betws-y-Coed, and the most-visited waterfall in Wales purely because it is a few steps from the A5. Roadside access, a small charge, and no walking involved, which makes it the right answer on a bad-weather day and the wrong one if you want solitude.

Wild swimming and safety
Plunge pools below waterfalls look inviting and are the most dangerous places to swim in an upland river: the water is cold enough to cause gasp response year-round, the hydraulics below a fall in spate can hold you under, and depth changes without warning. If you swim, do it downstream of the fall rather than in the plunge pool, and never after heavy rain. Welsh rivers rise fast.
